Before your Ohio visit

Match your transaction to the right office type, then check the local hours and official instructions.

Get or renew a driver license or state ID, or handle ordinary vehicle registration

A DR (Deputy Registrar License Agency).

The BMV says license agencies handle driver-license/ID issuance and vehicle registration. Some renewals are available online; check the transaction eligibility first.

Handle a vehicle title transaction

A County Clerk of Courts Title Office.

Ohio titles are issued by county clerk title offices. Use the title process page to check the documents and local payment options before travelling. The title-directory page itself lists a phone number but no hours.

Transfer an eligible private-party car title online

Ohio Title Portal.

The portal supports eligible casual private-party transfers. The BMV lists limits, including no lien on the existing or new title, an adult Ohio-resident buyer, an OH|ID account, and required signed/notarized documents. For other cases, use a county title office.

Use a limited-authority deputy registrar (LADR)

Use it only for title-related registration services allowed by the rule.

A LADR is not a regular full-service license agency. The current rule limits its work to specified electronic title-linked transactions, VIN inspections, related registration functions, and temporary tags/window placards.

Take an in-person driver knowledge test or driving test

For an in-person knowledge test, use a Driver Exam Station (DX) or a BMV-designated DR. For a road/skills test, schedule online and use the assigned testing location.

The BMV says knowledge testing is at any driver exam station or select deputy registrar locations. Road and skills tests are scheduled through BMV Online Services. DX is a testing category, separate from a license-issuing DR.

Take a CDL test

Use a location identified as a CDL Skills/Testing Location for the CDL skills test. Use a Driver Exam Station for CDL knowledge testing.

The official location directory labels Driver Exam Stations and CDL Skills/Testing Locations as distinct location types. The BMV says a CDL receipt for a state-owned skills facility is purchased at a DR agency. A kiosk is not a CDL testing category.

Renew a vehicle registration at a self-service kiosk

Use a BMV Express Kiosk (EX), if the transaction is eligible.

Ohio lists vehicle-registration renewal/sticker, duplicate registration/sticker, and E-Check status among the kiosk functions. The state directory labels EX separately from DR, DX, CDL Skills/Testing, and title offices. The kiosk source does not establish that all other transactions are available there.

Reduce waiting at a deputy registrar agency

Use Get In Line Online when available.

It places a visitor in a virtual queue. The BMV says it is not an appointment. The FAQ concerns license-agency visits; do not assume it applies to county title offices.
