Plan a Texas driver license or ID visit

Use these steps with the individual location details. Requirements are linked to the responsible agency.

1. Check whether you need an office visit

DPS offers online eligibility checks through its appointment process. If your transaction requires a visit, use the official scheduler.

2. Choose the transaction before the office

A CDL test site, a renewal-only branch and a general license office are not interchangeable. Read the location notes and select the transaction in the scheduler. The scheduler determines which offices and dates are available.

3. Prepare the documents for your situation

For a first license, DPS asks for identity, lawful presence or citizenship, Texas residency, Social Security information and applicable vehicle insurance. Its document tool creates a list for your circumstances. New residents surrendering an out-of-state license also need registration for vehicles they own.

4. Confirm testing requirements

Driving-test applicants need an Impact Texas Driver certificate dated within 90 days of the test. Age and transfer status affect driver-education requirements. Use the official checklist before booking a test.
