Texas service guide
Plan a Texas vehicle registration visit
Use these steps with the individual location details. Requirements are linked to the responsible agency.
1. Choose the county office for the vehicle transaction
For vehicle registration or title matters, start with the county tax office. A driver-license appointment at DPS does not book a county vehicle transaction. Confirm branch arrangements with the county.
Find county service information ↗2. Check your renewal options
TxDMV lists online, mail and in-person renewal options. Online renewal is generally available from 90 days before expiration through 12 months after expiration if you have not received an expired-registration citation.
Check renewal eligibility ↗3. Prepare for an in-person renewal
Bring the renewal notice and proof of current liability insurance. Without a notice, TxDMV lists your plate number, VIN or previous registration receipt as ways to identify the vehicle.
Read the renewal requirements ↗4. Check inspection and county arrangements
Noncommercial vehicles no longer require a safety inspection, but emissions requirements still apply in specified counties. Commercial vehicles still need the applicable inspection. Contact the county for accepted payment methods and any transaction cutoff.
